Windows 11’s “Never Combine” taskbar icons feature is coming in the fall

The taskbar in Windows 11 has been the subject of the most debate. Microsoft reorganized the taskbar so that it always remained fixed at the bottom of the display. Your pinned apps, running apps, open windows, and system are all still visible. However, Windows 11's taskbar lacks in functionality in some respects. No other screen edge can be used to relocate it.

The inability to rearrange icons in the taskbar is another restriction. This is probably the OS change that has gotten the least amount of praise. A Input Board Message With over 26,000 upvotes and 2,000 comments, the idea to "update the Windows 11 taskbar to support never combining app icons and showing labels" is clearly popular. This is the "biggest annoyance of Windows 11," according to one user.

It's been said, "There is no point in having all this taskbar real estate when only a couple of inches of it is getting used."noted. A second user shared their experience of having to use supplementary software in order to accomplish a task that, in theory, should have been built into Windows 11.

Unless I have the option to never combine them, I find the taskbar to be just as useful as the dock in MacOS the additional comment of another user. Furthermore, there are a number of other restrictions. The taskbar, for instance, cannot be customized in any way, shape, or form, nor can it be moved to a different location on the screen.

Compared to previous OS versions, Windows 8's taskbar experience is a step backward. The Taskbar was rebuilt from the ground up, and as a result, all features had to be rebuilt, which is the official and technical explanation for the downgrade.

Legacy features are coming in the fall

The "never combine" Taskbar feature, introduced with Windows 7, will soon be reintroduced by Microsoft so that users can once again ungroup icons, items, or buttons in the taskbar. You can get Windows 10 back to its original behavior, where multiple instances of an app do not share a single icon, by using this feature.

Microsoft is bringing back the option to display app titles, which was eliminated in Windows 11 21H2, alongside this new feature this fall. Even though the option to "never combine" is included in the public builds, it is currently inoperable because the necessary implementation codes are missing.

Microsoft released the Moment 2 update for Windows 11 on Patch Tuesday KB5023706), which reintroduced a toggle between the two states (expanded and collapsed) of the tablet's taskbar. The ability to drag and drop files between Taskbar icons was restored by Microsoft late last year.

More features, such as the ability to relocate the taskbar to the top, left, or right of the screen, are expected to roll back over the next few months.
