Windows 10 KB5023696 released – here’s what’s new and how to download





Release build 5023696 of Windows 10 is currently being pushed out to PCs in the production channel. Despite being a part of the Patch Tuesday cycle, this update for March 2023 does not include any major fixes or enhancements. Offline installers for Windows 10 KB5023696 are also available for download from Microsoft.

Since KB5023696 was released on a Tuesday, it is not expected to include any particularly significant changes. But that doesn't mean there won't be any interesting new features in future Windows 10 updates. The update includes a number of changes and enhancements, including those made to Windows Spotlight.

Reason being, the March 2023 Patch for Windows 10 contains all of the fixes that were released in February 2023. What's new in the operating system as of the most recent Patch Tuesday update? The release notes state that Windows Spotlight has been enhanced in the new update.

Windows Spotlight, for those who don't know, is a tool that helps Windows 10 maintain a streamlined and aesthetically pleasing lock screen. It equips the lock screen with the finest Bing wallpapers, themes, and background images. Before you even log in, these wallpapers will have downloaded and appeared on your screen.

Pop-ups and supplementary resources are integrated into these Spotlight backdrops. Microsoft claims that with today's update, the time it takes for links to load in order to provide more information has been reduced, thus improving the user experience. There was a change made that only appears to affect the Microsoft Edge web browser and the lock screen web service.

The update is compatible with any device running Windows 10 20H2 or later. Build 19045.2728 is available for 22H2 users. You'll get Build 19044.2728 if you're still using Windows 10 21H2. Today, enterprise customers can upgrade to Build 19042.2728 of 20H2.

(Windows 11 users, don't forget there's an upgrade for your machine, too. This is a newer patch with a number of updated features. The 22H2 update is now available KB5023706 with the additions of Moment 2, and the bug fixes being made to the original 21H2 version).

  • Accurately relaying the enforcement status of the Windows Defender Application Control (WDAC) user mode policy in MSInfo.exe

  • Fixing the issue where LSASS stops responding after Sysprep has been executed on a domain-joined computer.


After a long delay, Microsoft has resolved an issue that had been affecting VMs. In thin provisioning scenarios, they stopped working after a new disk was added to a storage pool.

Microsoft has confirmed a bug that may cause some devices to lose Microsoft Edge after installing the update. The issue occurs on computers where a Windows operating system has been installed using individualized installation media, such as a bootable USB stick or a burned CD. Adding this update without also installing the SSU released on March 29, 2021, causes this issue.

Only devices that manually download updates from Microsoft's servers will be affected. The Windows Update for Business-enabled devices are included. The most recent SSU and LCU should automatically download and install on any device that can connect to Windows Update.

Potential gaming performance issues


According to user reports, Microsoft has enabled Core Isolation/Memory Integrity and Virtualization-based Security (VBS) in the latest Windows 10 update. For some people who performed a fresh installation of Windows 10 22H2, this setting was enabled by default.

As a result, the performance of some games may suffer; however, you can fix this by disabling these features in the Windows 10 Settings app and the Windows Security app.
