Android apps are already available for use on the Windows 11 Dev channel preview

Microsoft just rolled out a new update for Windows 11 to the Windows Insider channels. The most notable point of this update is that it includes the ability to run Android applications that are of great interest to many people. Installing the application is quite simple. Microsoft partners with Amazon to have the Microsoft Store list the app, while the Amazon Appstore makes it available for you to install or update. Microsoft uses a subsystem called Windows Subsystem for Android to run Android apps on Windows 11.

You can now run Android apps on Windows 11

Android applications will run in a virtual machine but can still be placed next to other Windows windows. You can pin Android apps to the Start Menu or Taskbar and use all the multitasking and window switching features of Windows 11 like other apps. Currently, there are only about 50 applications to test. Initial experiences with The Verge were smooth, and apps from games to news to Amazon Kindle all worked fine. However, there are still some limitations, such as not being able to resize the application window properly, and Android apps consume a lot of resources. Currently, Microsoft has allowed Windows Insider users of the Windows 11 Dev channel to test running Android applications. Previously, only a small group of US users in the Beta channel were able to test the feature on compatible Intel, AMD, and Qualcomm devices. To be able to test Android apps on Windows 11 early, you need to meet some of the following requirements:
  • A computer running Windows 11 build 2200.xxx or later that meets the minimum hardware requirements is required.
  • BIOS/UEFI virtualization must be enabled.
With the ability to run Android apps on Windows 11, you can do the following:
  • Android apps can be discovered and installed from the Microsoft Store.
  • You can easily run these apps side by side with the help of the Snap Layouts feature.
  • The Android app is also integrated into Alt+Tab and Task view, so you can easily switch between them
  • You can see notifications from android apps in Action Center or share clipboards between a Windows app and an Android app.
  • A lot of Windows accessibility settings are applied to Android apps, and Microsoft is working with Amazon to improve them even more.
