How to change the display language in Windows 7

If you purchased a computer running the English version of Windows 7, however, English is not your native language, then this guide will show you how to change the display language in Windows 7 to one of the 30 languages supported by Microsoft on Win 7. We will be using Windows 7 Ultimate in this guide, but you can apply it to all other versions of Windows 7 as well. The steps below can be used to install other languages for Windows 7, such as Chinese, Spanish, etc.

  1. To get started, click the Start button (the Windows logo) to open the Start Menu.
  2. When the Start Menu opens, type "change display language" in the Windows search box.
  3. A list of search results will appear in the Start Menu; click Change display language from the list.
  4. The Region and Language window will appear. Activate the Keyboards and Languages tab.
  5. Click on Install/Uninstall Languages buttion...
In order for you to be able to use languages other than the default language installed in Windows, you'll need to download them from Microsoft and then install the language pack for the language you want to use.

Install additional language packs from Windows Update

Install or uninstall display languages will appear, prompting you to install display languages or uninstall display languages. Click Install to download the language pack. You will then be prompted to choose the location of the language pack with two options: Launch Windows Update or Browse computer or network. Click Launch Windows Update to get the most recent language packs straight from Microsoft, unless you already have one saved on your computer.

When you select the Launch Windows Update option, the Windows Update window will appear. Note: Updates, security patches, language packs, drivers, and other features can all be downloaded straight from Microsoft using Windows Update. There are two types of updates that are generally available from Windows Update: those that are important and must be downloaded immediately, and those that are optional. The language packs that fall into the update aren't required and aren't critical, so you'll need to manually select the language packs you want to use to download from Windows Update. Click the # optional updates in the available link ( # refers to the number of optional updates available for download) in Windows Update.

The Select updates to install page will display a list of Important and Optional updates.
  1. Activate the Optional tab.
  2. Select the language you want to use by adding a check mark next to the language pack in the list in the Windows 7 Language Packs section.
  3. Once the language packs have been selected, click OK.

You will return to the Windows Update page, where you will click the Install Updates button to start downloading the language packs you selected from the list. Once the language packs are downloaded and installed, they are ready to use.

Select the languages you just downloaded from the Choose a display language menu when you get back to the Region and Language dialog box. Once you select the language, click OK to save the changes. For the new display language to work, you'll need to log out of your computer. When you sign in again, the display language you selected becomes active. Reference:
