Microsoft to take on Apple M MacBook with new ARM chips & Windows 12

Microsoft's "Microsoft Silicon team," along with its partners, is developing new ARM chips to compete with Apple's M chips. Some job postings I've seen make it sound like the company is developing its own ARM chips on Silicon for use in consumer electronics. Furthermore, Microsoft is reportedly tailoring Windows 12 to the needs of the Silicon-ARM architecture. These changes align with Microsoft's impending release of Windows 12, which will feature a silicon-optimized and AI-enabled variant. Most of the job postings have been removed, but they described work with custom silicon accelerators, SoCs, and other high-performance, high-bandwidth designs. This hints that Microsoft is developing its own ARM-based chips in an effort to rival the efficiency and power of Apple's M chips. The "Microsoft Silicon team" is looking for a "Principal System on Chip (SoC) Silicon Architect" with knowledge of high-performance SOC architecture, as well as CPU and GPU architecture and design, according to the first job posting. The successful applicant will "collaborate closely with internal customers and partners" while "building complex, state-of-the-art SOCs using leading silicon technology nodes." Documents obtained by Windows Latest detailed the engineer's duties, which included "creating SOC programming models, comprehensive and clear SOC performance requirements, and working with customer hardware and software teams." In light of yet another employment posting on the website of the tech giant There's a "Microsoft Silicon Team" responsible for making ARM chips in-house. Microsoft's desire to challenge Apple's market dominance has likely prompted the company to invest heavily in the development of its own ARM chips, as evidenced by these job postings. Multiple engineers are needed for positions on the company's Silicon Team. Jobs in this field include Senior Silicon Power Integrity CAD Manager, Principal Design Engineer, Senior Physical Design Verification Engineer, and Principal System on Chip (SoC) Silicon Architect. Microsoft's upcoming devices may benefit greatly from the integration of these new chips and the forthcoming Windows 12 operating system.

Windows 12 would be optimized for AI and Silicon chips

It is anticipated that a number of AI-powered features will be included in Windows 12, which is currently in development for a release in the latter half of 2024.

As an illustration, just recently we saw an Windows 11 preview builds feature an AI-driven "Smart Snap" interface. While Windows 11's Snap feature makes it simple to snap apps in a multi-monitor setup, Windows 10 doesn't include it. The size and shape of the interface can be customized, but the AI integration automatically organizes apps into a grid.

Microsoft's Windows 12 is rumored to be a part of the Windows Core project, which aims to develop a more flexible and adaptable version of Windows. Windows 12's hardware and software may be further improved through the incorporation of custom ARM chips. Microsoft could build an effective, efficient, and AI-centric platform with the silicon-optimized version of Windows 12 and new ARM chips. This move may set Microsoft up as a formidable rival to Apple's M chips in the ever-changing computing industry. However, it is important to note that Microsoft's plans may change before the release of Windows 12 and ARM chips, even though these plans and the related job listings suggest a significant shift in the company's strategy.
