Microsoft confirms a Windows 11 bug is crashing some apps on Intel PCs

As part of its regular Patch Tuesday initiative, Microsoft has just released a number of updates for Windows 11 and 10. Some users on Intel hardware have reported crashes when attempting to launch certain applications after the update rollout began, particularly those utilizing older graphics drivers from early 2022.

Updates to Windows, such as KB5022360, for example, "apphelp.dll is missing" errors have caused the apps to crash for some users. Given the gravity of the situation, you might assume that everyone is affected, but in fact, this problem is being experienced by only those who use Intel hardware.

We haven't noticed any problems on our end, but we've heard from some readers who had the crash because they were using older Intel drivers. For the most part, affected devices are identical to unaffected ones; the only distinguishing factor is the use of older Windows drivers rather than the most recent official updates.

Extending the previous proof of concept Microsoft has acknowledged the problems experienced by some Intel-based PCs, limiting the affected population to machines running Intel graphics drivers version 26.20.100.7463 through 30.0.101.1190. Microsoft will probably release a patch soon due to the seriousness of the problem.

In addition, users could fix the issue by updating to a newer version of the Intel GPU driver (version 30.0.101.1190), as detailed in the official Microsoft documentation. Either use Windows Update to get the most recent Intel driver, or manually download and install it using the Helping software solve problems

Microsoft has stated that drivers greater than 30.0.101.1190 can be used without risk, and that an update will be released shortly.

Microsoft has said, "We are working on a resolution and will provide an update in an upcoming release," without giving a specific date for the rollout of the urgent fix.

The documents list the following Windows releases as vulnerable:

Other known issues in Windows 11’s January 2023 update

Another issue that Microsoft is cognizant of is that provisioning packages may not function as intended on some systems. It's possible that some computers won't be fully set up, and the Out of Box Experience will be compromised as a result of this bug. Provisioning packages (.PPKG files) are only used in institutional settings, so they shouldn't have any effect on personal computers.

The third known problem involves copying files that are several gigabytes in size. Microsoft warns that copying or transferring files in Windows can take more time than expected.

If you're using Windows 11 build 22H2 or later, you may notice that file transfers take a long time.
